Marketers’ Trends For 2021 (The Aftermath Of Covid)
2020 was a year for the books. Between the pandemic, the stock market crash, the wildfires, the presidential election, plus everything in between, a constant feeling of instability is familiar for many. This instability affected many aspects of marketing, including consumer behavior, branding, and targeting. According to PWC, 49% of consumers now avoid leaving their homes, 50% work from home partially or entirely, 42% avoid public transportation when leaving home, and 57% are social distancing from friends and family. So, when considering the outlook for 2021, we must ask: What changes will have a lasting impact once a vaccine has been administered to the general public? Look below to find out.
Influencer Marketing
Social media usage increased dramatically throughout the pandemic, and research firms believe this trend will be lasting. One study found that 40% of people reported purchasing a product online after watching it being used by an influencer on social networks. As a result, there’s an opportunity for brands to use social media influencers more than ever.
The Facebook Backlash
In the past few years, Facebook has been receiving backlash for data leaks, spreading fake news, and removing content. To add to the backlash, Facebook is being scrutinized by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and dozens of states for antitrust violations. This is a huge deal and will likely have lasting consequences for the tech giant. If governmental action alters the way Facebook operates, it could considerably change the marketing services Facebook offers.
A Cure Does Not Mean Back To Normal
Many are ready for the effects of 2020’s economic troubles to reverse, and as we transition into 2021, people are eager for recovery to take hold fully. However, Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell advises we should not expect the economy to continue where we left it off in February 2020. “We’re not going back to the same economy; we’re going back to a different economy,” he mentions. Next year, it’s more likely that people will still be working remotely, rather than going back to the office. Likewise, marketers who have increased online marketing will continue to do so. Marketing channels and approaches used during the pandemic will not change drastically.
Things are going to get better. But that doesn’t mean they’re going to go back to where they were before, and that’s not a bad thing if you’re ready for it.
